Discussion of the name

Smeawine is a masculine OE name formed from the adjective smēah (‘sagacious, acute, subtle’) and the common second element wine (‘friend, protector, lord’) (von Feilitzen 1937: 366). Smēah was an unusual first element and Smeawine an uncommon name, the only person currently recorded in PASE being a moneyer active at Guildford (Surr.) in the period 1017–23 (Smeawine 2). The name seems to have been a little more widely used outside landed society. Examples from the end of the eleventh century and the early years of the twelfth include two witnesses of local transactions in Devon, Smeawine the priest and Smeawine of Holcombe (Pelteret 1990: nos. 107, 140), and one or more London moneyers in the period 1100–45 (EMC).
