Discussion of the name
The masculine Scandinavian name here normalized as Skule (elsewhere rendered as ON Skuli or Anglicized as Scule) was originally a byname connected with the ON verb skýla (‘to protect’). The name was widely used in Iceland from the tenth century and also occurs in Norway but only once, if that, in Denmark. In England it is known to have been used from the tenth century onwards, appearing in place-names in Durham, Yorkshire, Rutland, and East Anglia (von Feilitzen 1937: 366; Fellows Jensen 1968: 254; Insley 1994: 337–9) as well as being the name of several historical persons (Scula 1 = Skule 8; Scule 1 = Skule 1; Scule 3 = Skule 3). In the eleventh century there were moneyers called Skule at Exeter under Cnut (Scule 4 = Skule 4) and York under Cnut’s sons and Edward (Scule 5–7 = Skule 5–7).The spellings in DB include one badly garbled as Strui but identifiable as Skule on other grounds (see Skule 10).
