Profile

Five parcels of land and three commended lordships all ascribed to Brun and within a 10-mile radius of Ipswich might seem on the face of it to represent a single landowner. The balance of probability is tipped in favour of three identifications by the circumstances of post-Conquest succession and geography.

What serves to identify Brun 21, and to distinguish him from Brun 19 and Brun 20, was succession by Bishop Odo and his tenure of a very small estate on the Stour estuary south-west of Ipswich. He appears in a group of free men, three holding land at Brantham, one at the unlocated Belenei, and one at Higham. They had 60 acres worth 10s. in all, and it has here been divided equally between them, but in truth we do not know how much of it belonged to Brun. What unites the five men is simply that their holdings were gobbled up into Bishop Odo’s lordship after the Conquest. Nothing is said of Brun’s commendation TRE. The fact that this estate did not pass to Brun 19’s successor Roger Bigod or Brun 20’s successor Hervey de Bourges argues against the holder of land at Brantham being identical with either of them.
