Profile

This entry records that Godmund held 3 virgates at Stanstead Abbotts in Hertfordshire with 10 shillings TRE; that he was the man of King Edward, and that he could sell his land. This formulation suggests that he was commended to Edward, but did not hold his land from him. The same Godmund continued to hold the same estate in 1086, which is listed among the lands of the king’s thegns in Hertfordshire.

Although both were the men of King Edward, it is unlikely that Godmund 4 was identical with Guthmund 5. Stanstead Abbotts is located some distance away from the latter’s nearest demesne estates in Essex; Guthmund 5 is described as a thegn; there is no evidence that Guthmund 5 survived as a landholder in 1086; and Godmund 4’s holding at Stanstead Abbotts is smaller than most of Guthmund 5’s demesne estates. The distance between holdings makes it unlikely that Godmund 4 was identical with Guthmund 10, Guthmund 11 or Godmund 1, even though the former was a man of king Edward, and the latter continued to hold his land in 1086.
