Profile

Great Domesday records that Ordgar 15 held one hide and worth 60 shillings TRE at ‘Stochelie’ (for the purposes of mapping, we have accepted one of the possible ‘Stochelie’ places identified by Frank and Caroline Thorn in their notes to Domesday Book 9: Devon (15:17)). Exon Domesday adds that he was the man of Eadmer Atori, and that he could go to whichever lord he would with his land: ‘Ordgarus fuit homo Edmer Atorii … potuit ire ad quelibet dominum cum ista terra’ (Exon 215a, and cf. 500a). The fact that this estate was relatively small and was geographically isolated from the others attributed to men of the same name commends the view that Ordgar 15 held only this estate.

Ordgar 15 is unlikely to have been identical with Ordgar 21, since the latter’s estates lay about 29 miles away in Somerset and passed to different successors. In common with Ordgar 15, the estates of Ordgar 19 passed to Robert count of Mortain; however, this is not significant since Robert was one of the wealthiest lords in England in 1086 with a widely scattered holding, and Ordgar 19’s estates lay more than 140 miles away in Northamptonshire.
