Profile

The entry for Gangsdown is followed by the assertion that ‘these 2 estates which Ordgar holds of Miles he ought to hold of the king, for he himself and his father and uncle held them freely TRE.’ On this basis, Ordgar is attributed a one third share of these two estates in the PASE Domesday database.

The fact that Ordgar survived as a subtenant of these estates in 1086 commends the view that he was identical with the Ordgar who is listed among the ‘servants of the king’ as the holder of ‘Adlach’ in 1086. It has been suggested that ‘Adlach’ could be either Standlake or Latchford in Great Haseley, since neither of these places are listed in Domesday (Darby and Campbell 1962: 194 n. 5). Latchford in Haseley is about 5 miles away from Berrick Salome, and is therefore the more likely of these two identifications. If so, the Godwine who held ‘Adlach’ TRE may have been Ordgar’s father or uncle.

The fact that these three estates were geographically isolated from other estates attributed to people called Ordgar and passed to a unique successor commends the view that they were his only holdings.
