Profile

The fact that three estates lay less than 3 miles apart commends the view that they were held by the same person although they passed to two different successors. Ordgar 21 may have been identical with Ordgar se wite (Ordgar the White = Ordgar 11) who is listed among the witnesses of a list in OE of dues pertaining to Taunton, which was drawn up at an unknown date either late in the reign of King Edward or during the reign of King William before 1086 (Robertson 1939: 238,  489). Clayhill is about 9 miles north of Taunton. Ordgar 21 is unlikely to have been identical with Ordgar 15, since the latter’s estate lay about 29 miles away in Devon and passed to a different successor.
