Summary

Finn 2 the Dane held estates in Buckinghamshire, Essex and Suffolk, which were worth just over £20 in total; he was also the lord of 13 burgesses and one free man TRE. He survived within the Conqueror’s regime and acquired several small estates in Suffolk after 1066, but appears to have died before 1086. His wife, Wulfgifu (Wulfgifu 10), held two estates in Essex in 1086, including at least one formerly held by Finn the Dane; however, the bulk of his holding had passed to Richard fitzGilbert by that date.

Profile

The estates listed above passed to four different successors and were located in two distinct regions. However, three considerations commend the view that they were held by the same individual: Finn’s name was rare; the same byname was used to describe him in Buckinghamshire and Essex; and his holdings in Essex made him a landholder of some substance, which makes it plausible that he could manage dispersed holdings.

Finn is given the byname dacus (Who was the sheriff of Suffolk in 1086?IE entries/mentionsVCH Essex, i. 348-9VCH Buckinghamshire i. 218VCH Suffolk i. 398%%
