Profile
Moding 3’s tiny estate was one of six such at Thurleigh, on a low plateau from which rises a tributary of the Great Ouse in north Bedfordshire. DB records that he was the man of Queen Eadgyth (Eadgyth 3); it also notes that he ‘could sell’, indicating that he held his land with power of alienation and not in dependent tenure, so Moding was probably the queen’s man by commendation. It is probable that this was Moding 3’s only estate. However, because of his extremely rare name and the possible connection with Thurleigh of Eudo 2 the steward (Palmer et al. 2002: DB Beds. 28,1 Notes), successor to the estates of Moding 2 in Essex, it is conceivable that Moding 3 and Moding 2 were the same man; but the link is tenuous and the men’s estates were over 60 miles apart.
