Profile

Denchworth does not lie near any estate held TRE by someone called Leofgifu except for that at Liddington held by Abbess Leofgifu 5 of Shaftesbury (and which was itself further from that abbey than all but one of its estates) and that at Reading held by Abbess Leofgifu 6. Although the possibility that Denchworth was a private estate of Leofgifu 6 cannot entirely be discounted, Leofgifu 13 was described as libera femina rather than abbatissa and Denchworth was held by Lawrence as the tenant of Robert of Stafford (Robert 42) in 1086 rather than by the abbot of Battle. It is therefore most likely that Leofgifu 13 was a separate woman distinct from Leofgifu 5 or Leofgifu 6.
