Profile

Ragnhild 3’s estate was at Hartley, on low ground by the Foudry Brook near its confluence with the Kennet and thence the Thames in Berkshire. DB states that Ragnhild held of King Edward (Edward 15), but whether that lordship was by dependent tenure, commendation or soke is unclear.

Ragnhild’s gender remains uncertain, because the DB spelling Rachenild could represent the masculine or feminine forms of the name and there are no conclusive indications one way or another in the DB entry. Although a male landholder is the more likely, therefore, the question must be left open. The name is rendered as feminine in the Phillimore edition of DB and as masculine in the Alecto edition.

This was one of only two estates recorded in DB as held TRE by someone called Ragnhild and at over 160 miles apart they were too far removed to have been held by the same person. There is no reason to consider Ragnhild 3 in connection with any other estate or person.
