Profile

Swening 2 held a small manor in Buckinghamshire that is unnamed in DB, but the text indicates that it lay in Moulsoe Hundred in the north-east of the county. Page (1905: 266) suggested that this manor lay in Bow Brickhill, on rising ground overlooking where Watling Street crosses the River Lovat (or Ouzel), although it does not appear in his more detailed discussion of the parish (Page 1927: 289-93). The estate passed to Walter the Fleming (Walter 11) after the Conquest and represented Walter’s only estate in the county, but he did hold lands in Bedfordshire just to the east of Brickhill and so Page’s suggestion that has been adopted here for mapping purposes.

DB states that Swening was the man of Earl Harold (Harold 3) and, because it also records that Swening could sell his land and therefore was not holding it in dependent tenure, we can presume that Harold was Swening’s lord by commendation.

This was the only estate held by someone called Swening in DB and there is no reason to consider Swening 2 in connection with anyone else.
