Sweting 10’s holding of 1 virgate and 6 acres worth 6s. was at Southcote, a ‘lost’ place not recorded since 1546 but which lay in Stone parish in the Thame valley in central Buckinghamshire (Page 1908: 307-11). He was the subtenant of William fitzConstantine (William 85), whose main estate was in Essex and it is not known how he came to have this solitary holding in Buckinghamshire. It is unlikely that Sweting 10 was the same as Sweting 9, a TRW tenant of Abingdon Abbey with a small manor about 13 miles to the south-west of Stone because their lords were different and their holdings were small. For similar reasons it is conceivable but unlikely that Sweting 10 was the same man as Swærting (cf. Redin 1919: 169), one of whose estates in 1086 was only 3 miles from Stone, because the antecessors, tenants-in-chief and later descents of the two manors were all different and neither name is so exceptionally rare as to require proximity to outweigh these differences.
