Leofgifu 8 (spelt as Leueue in Domesday Book; but mistakenly given as Lefhese, Leshusa in the corresponding entries in Inquisitio Comitatus Cantabrigiensis) held two small estates in Cambridgeshire TRE. Neither was held ‘as a manor’; and they had a combined assessment of 3 virgates and a value of 25s TRE. Leofgifu 8 was commended to Eadgifu ‘the Fair’ TRE (a byname here supplied by the ICC entries rather than those in Domesday).

These estates are the only ones in Cambridgeshire held by someone called Leofgifu, and their very close proximity and small size point strongly towards their being held by the same person. This is put beyond reasonable doubt because no other woman called Leofgifu was commended to Eadgifu ‘the Fair’ TRE or held estates that passed to Count Alan (Alan 1) after the Conquest. Even the ICC confusion between the names Leofgifu and Leofhyse, itself an extremely rare name and not recorded elsewhere in ICC, in both entries adds weight to this conclusion.
