Profile

Shepreth was a small vill of 5 hides on the river Rhee 9 miles upstream from Cambridge. In 1066 it was divided among nine holdings, two of them monastic (Ely abbey and the nuns of Chatteris) and seven in the hands of small free men and sokemen (Cambs. 5:35; 11:4; 22:9; 26:32–3), among whom King Edward’s man Hemming had 1½ virgates and a sixth share of one of the mills. This was the holding of a rich peasant, unusual only in including milling rights. Hemming had to provide watch and ward service (inward) but was free to grant or sell his land. His was not the sort of property held by king’s thegns, and in any case Shepreth is too isolated to be associated with any of the other Hemmings.
