Profile

Fridebert 4’s small estate was at Harston, on the valley floor of a branch of the River Cam between the low hills of south Cambridgeshire.  The details of his estate are entered no fewer than five times in DB and its satellites: twice as main entries in DB, once as a marginal addition, once in ICC (46) and again in IE (106).  Although there are slight variations of detail between the five entries it is apparent that Fridebert was a sokeman who although his soke belonged to Ely Abbey ‘could depart without permission’, indicating that he had power of alienation and was not one of the abbey’s dependent tenants.  The phrasing of some entries suggests that Fridebert was also in the abbot’s commendation TRE, although this is not certain.

Fridebert 4’s estate was fairly small and 35 miles from the nearest held by anyone else of that name TRE, none of whom were associated with Ely Abbey, and so there is no reason to consider him in connection with any other person or estate.
