Profile

Toxteth and Upholland were quite far apart but of similar size, and their resources are likely to have been complementary, Toxteth being by the Mersey estuary and Upholland on the low hills east of the river Douglas. They have been identified as belonging to the same man, but the different spellings (Stain– and Sten– or Stein–) leaves open the possibility that two men are involved, especially as Toxteth was divided equally between Stenulf and a Bernulf (perhaps a close relative, given the common final element) who does not appear at or near Upholland.

The two, taken as a pair, are distant from other manors assigned to Stenulf, but the possibilities that Stenulf 5 was identical with Stenulf 2 and Stenulf 6, and more remotely that Stenulfs 2–6 were all one man, are discussed under Stenulf 2 and Stenulf 3 respectively.
