Profile
The identification of Leofrun 13 as the TRE holder of two tiny Cornish estates is not securely established. The two estates passed to different subtenants of Count Robert of Mortain (Robert 9) after the Conquest, but post-Conquest succession in Cornwall is rarely a reliable guide to TRE tenure. Overall, the relative proximity of these two small estates and the absence of other TRE instances of the name Leofrun within 85 miles of them just tip the balance of probability in favour of identifying the holder of both estates as the same woman, Leofrun 13.Similarly, the identification of Leofrun 13’s holding at Treverim (spelt Treuorim in Exon Domesday (at 257b4)) with modern Trefrize, in a small tributary valley of the River Inny in east Cornwall, is not certain but no viable alternative has yet been suggested. It was assessed for 1 virgate but paid geld only for 1 ferling. Both assessments may be misleading, however, because the presence of land for 3 ploughs and a value of 10s in 1086 (no TRE value is given) implies a slightly more substantial holding.
Given the uncertainty of locating Treverim it is a moot point as to whether the only other Cornish estate to be held TRE by a woman called Leofrun was close enough to have been held by the same person. It lay at Porthallow on the Cornish coast 16 miles to the south-west of Trefrize and was also tiny holding, although again the presence of land for 2 ploughs and a value of 7s TRE could indicate a slightly larger holding than its assessment of 1 ferling would suggest.
