Profile

Hademar 2’s estate lay on the coast, on eastern side of Mounts Bay in west Cornwall. The estate was relatively small, even allowing for the note in Domesday Book that he paid tax for 1 virgate TRE but that 1 hide was there in 1086 (which may reflect the ‘under-rating’ of assessments noted elsewhere in Cornwall and Devon rather than being an instance of beneficial hidation), and it lay nearly a hundred miles from the estates of Hademar 3 in central Devon. Although both men’s estates had passed directly to or to subtenants of Robert, count of Mortain, by 1086 and both men had the same very rare name, therefore, the distance between their estates renders it most likely that they were separate people.
