Profile
Merchion 2’s holding was probably small even if allowance is made for its apparent TRE under-assessment in Domesday Book, and it was the only estate held TRE by someone called Merchion. Its precise location is uncertain, however. The order of entries in Exon points to a place in Stratton Hundred in north-east Cornwall, perhaps in the vicinity of Norton and Moreton and therefore in the vicinity of Stratton itself. The place-name form given in DB, Carbihan, corresponds to the Old Cornish elements *ker ‘fort’ and byghan ‘small’ (Padel 1985: 21-2, 50-4) and probably refers to one of the numerous settlement ‘rounds’ in the area. Although Carvean, suggested as the location by Thorn and Thorn (1979: Notes to 5,24,23), may be of the same derivation, its location in Tybesta Hundred renders this unlikely.Bibliography
