Profile
The precise location of Wine 38’s tiny TRE holding is uncertain because of the differing place-name forms given in DB and Exon. DB gives it as Clvnewic, which suggests Clinnick (about 4 miles to the east of Bodmin), whereas Exon (231b3) gives it as Ciluinauuit, which suggests Kilminorth, just to the west of Looe (cf. Padel 1985: 46, 58-9); both lay in Fawton Hundred, but the latter is adopted by the Alecto edition and here. There were four estates in Fawton Hundred (and numerous others elsewhere in Cornwall) held TRE by people with Old English names ending in ‑wine and for which Wine 38 might represent an abbreviated form. However, both the Exon and Exchequer scribes regarded the TRE holder of Kilminorth (or Clinnick) as being called simply Wine, and so the identity of Wine 38 as a separate person seems more likely than not.
