Whether assessed at ½ ferling or 1 virgate, Cynesige 18’s holding in north-east Cornwall was not a large one even if this assessment represented an instance of beneficial hidation (although it is more likely to reflect the ‘under-rating’ of assessments noted elsewhere in Cornwall and Devon). It is therefore highly unlikely that he can be the same man as Cynesige 19, who held a similarly small estate in Somerset, because the estates are 75 miles apart. This interpretation gains some further support from the fact that the estates passed to different TRW successors, Cynesige 18’s passing to Turstin the sheriff (Turstin 2) as a subtenant of the great tenant-in-chief Robert, count of Mortain (Robert 9).
