Profile

Ealhhere 23 was a subtenant of Henry de Ferrers (Henry 6) in 1086, holding a small cluster of estates on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border with a total assessment of just over 7¼ carucates and a TRW value of about £7 10s.  There is no obvious connection between Ealhhere 23 and any of the TRE holders of his estates.  The name Ealhhere was unusual and so it is possible that Ealhhere 23 could be the same as Ealhhere 22, a subtenant (and sub-subtenant) of Earl Roger 4 with estates in Shropshire that lay more than 40 miles from those of Ealhhere 23 but were of a similar size; although Earl Roger had estates in Staffordshire he held no land in Derbyshire and Henry de Ferrers held no land in Shropshire, so the difference in tenant-in-chief need not be a bar to identifying Ealhhere 23 with Ealhhere 22.  However, the tight clustering of Ealhhere 21’s estates suggests a very localized holding and there is no evidence of a later link between his estates and the Fitz Aer family to whom Ealhhere 22’s estates in Shropshire descended (Lewis 1990: 18-19).  In light of this, the shared personal name is insufficient to press the identification further and on present evidence it remains more likely than not that Ealhhere 23 and Ealhhere 22 were different people.
