Profile
One carucate at Hatton, on the comparatively fertile soils of the Dove valley in south-west Derbyshire, was divided among three men TRE, with Colling being named second, but was said to be held as two manors only. It is unclear whether DB’s ‘2 manors’ was a mistake for ‘3 manors’ or whether one of the three men had an inferior tenure which did not qualify as manorial. Another carucate at Hatton was attached to the next manor upstream, Scropton (Derb. 6:27, 48).There are no circumstances to connect this Colling with his namesake in Shropshire nearly 50 miles to the west.
