Profile
The precise location of Ifing 4’s estate at Alreford is not known but the order of entries in Exon points to the area of Axminster and Musbury in east Devon (Gover et al. 1931-2: 2 634; Thorn and Thorn 1985: Notes to 16,167); a ford in the vicinity of what was later Newenham Abbey is the most likely referent and this location has been adopted here for mapping purposes. In any event, Alreford lay nearly 50 miles from any other estate held TRE by anyone else called Ifing and it is highly unlikely that such a tiny estate would be an outlier of another estate at such a distance. Despite the rarity of the name Ifing, therefore, it is probable that this was Ifing 4’s only estate.
