Profile

Yric 3’s tiny estate lay at Bulkworthy, in the upper Torridge valley in north-west Devon. It was over 200 miles from any other estate held TRE by someone with that or a similar name and it is therefore safe to presume that Bulkworthy was Yric 3’s only estate.

Despite the small size of his estate, Yric 3 was no dependent tenant but instead had the power of alienation, ‘to go with his land to whichever lord he would’ (Exon 211a2). Although we do not know to which lord he had commended himself, the Exon Terrae Occupatae (Exon 497b1) note that his manor had been wrongfully added to the TRE lands of Eadmær Ator (Eadmær 23), that had passed to Robert, count of Mortain. It may be, therefore, that Yric had been commended to Eadmær’s lordship and that it was on these grounds (deliberately confusing the bond of lordship with dependent tenure) that Count Robert had claimed Yric’s manor.
