Profile
Siduwine 3 was the TRE holder of ½ hide at Ponsford, in the Culm valley to the west of Cullompton in central Devon. This estate seems too small and too distant (more than 40 miles) from those of either Siduwine 2 (at Tamerlande) or Siduwine 4 (at Brixton) for its holder to be identified with either of them, and the fact that all three estates passed to different post-Conquest successors adds weight to this interpretation.Nevertheless, the extremely rare name Siduwine occurs nowhere else in DB except with regard to these three estates in Devon, and the possibility that all three instances refer to the same person rather than to two or three different people cannot entirely be ruled out. Furthermore, small estates at Peeke and Ponsford, adjacent to those of Siduwine 2 and 3 respectively, had TRE holders called Edwin; and although the name Edwin is not uncommon amongst TRE landholders in Devon – there are 11 such instances – it is odd that it is twice found in such close association with the rare name Siduwine. The association is tenuous, however, and is outweighed by the distances between the estates and difference in their successors.
