Profile

Beorhtwig 10’s tiny estate at Mary Tavy, on the western fringes of Dartmoor, had land for 4 ploughs and a TRE value of 30s, which implies a slightly larger estate than its assessment of only 1 virgate suggests.  Exon (317b3) calls Beorhtwig ‘the son of Cam’ (Bristuit camesone – a detail omitted by DB); Exon (126b margin, 401a4) also notes that a Beorhtric son of Cam held two small estates at Boode and North Buckland in north Devon.  The apparent uniqueness of the name Cam, together with the fact that the two men who have it as their patronymic also share the OE element beorht- in their own names (often a feature of familial naming patterns), renders it almost certain that all the references are to the same person, Cam 1, and that Beorhtwig and Beorhtric were brothers.

However, it cannot be assumed Cam 1 ever held any of the lands held by his sons TRE.  Not only does the small estate of Beorhtwig 10 lie 38 miles to the south of those held by his brother, which seems too far removed for them to have formed part of the same holding, but it also appears from DB that Beorhtric had acquired at least one of his estates only shortly before the Conquest and may have had other Devonshire estates.

It is worth noting, in passing, that the sons of Cam 1 shared the same first element, beorht, in their names, albeit not one shared or alliterating with that of their father.
