Profile
Helewis 1’s tiny manor was at Baccamore, a ‘lost’ place near Cornwood on the south-western fringe of Dartmoor in south Devon. At some point after the Conquest it was merged with an adjacent manor of the same name and size (the details in the slightly ambiguous DB entry are clarified by Exon 331a3 and TO 505b3), but there is no evidence that the two TRE holders were connected.Although Helewis’s name is given here in its Continental Germanic form it is possible that the DB and Exon spellings (Elous and Ealous respectively) represent it in its Old French derivative Heloise (Forssner 1916: 145; Thorn and Thorn 1985: DB 17,92 Notes). In either case, she joins the small group of such names evidenced in pre-Conquest south-west England. There is, however, no clear reason to associate her with Alweis 1, whose Old French name is similarly spelt in DB (Alous) but whose TRE manor was also very small and lay more than 30 miles from Baccamore.
