Profile

Axminster, on the river Axe in east Devon, was a major royal estate (Devon 1:11) but there was a second and much smaller manor there which in 1086 was held of William Chievre by Eadwulf 69. It continued separate from the main part of Axminster in later centuries (Phill. Devon, notes Ch. 19 and 19,45). Lightly assessed at 1 virgate, it included land for 2 ploughs, a little meadow, and access to common pasture. Eadwulf farmed there with 1½ ploughs and 4 slaves, and kept a herd of goats and a few cattle. The only other inhabitants were bordars.

The corresponding entry in Exon gives a different name for William Chievre’s tenant, Vlfus, and originally said that he held from ‘the earl’ (comite), but the latter word seems to be underlined for deletion and replaced by an interlined W (for William Chievre). The change in subtenant’s name from Vlfus (Ulf, or possibly Wulf) in Exon to Eddulfus (Eadwulf) in GDB is susceptible of several different explanations, and the tenant of Axminster in 1086 might well not have been called Eadwulf at all.
