Profile
Haca 1’s two estates both lay amongst the hills and valleys of north-central Devon, only about 3 miles apart from each other and both in Witheridge Hundred. The geld estimates for each seem slightly low relative to the TRW estimates of their ploughlands, so it may be that this is another example of the under-assessment for geld observed elsewhere in Devon and Cornwall.Although the name Haca is not otherwise recorded from pre-Conquest England (except perhaps in a few place-names) the initial Hac- is consistent throughout the DB and Exon spellings and this strongly suggests that the name is distinct from that of Heca 4, sheriff of Devon TRE, the spellings of whose name have an equally consistent initial Hec-.
