Profile
This is the only estate that DB records as being held either TRE or TRW by someone called Bicca (or Bica).Bicca 3’s TRE manor at Coleridge was on the high ground to the north-west of Stokenham in south Devon, overlooking Start Bay. Bicca is described in DB as being able ‘to go where he wished with the land’, showing that he had the power of alienation over it.
The Exon entry (349a1) describes Bicca as a thegn and the TO (at 504a1) notes that he held his manor in parage, which implies that was part of a shared inheritance in some way. If so then it might have been associated with the only other TRE estate at Coleridge, that of 1 virgate held by Ælgifu in both TRE and 1086, because DB records no population for Ælfgifu’s land and Thorn & Thorn (1985: DB 23,25 Notes) suggest that it was worked by some of the 3 bordars who lived on Bicca’s former manor in 1086.
