Winemar 3’s little estate was at Woodbeare, on a tributary stream of the river Weaver in east Devon. Although his Continental Germanic name was unusual in pre-Conquest England it was by no means unprecedented and there is no reason to connect him with any of the post-Conquest holders of that name, of whom the closest was the subtenant on an estate over 30 miles away in south Devon.
