Profile
Snotta 2’s estate was at Lupridge, in the Avon valley in south Devon. Its possession of ‘land for 4 ploughs’ could indicate a slightly larger holding than its assessment of ½ hide would suggest.Snotta 2’s name was extremely rare and may be related to that of the equally rare Snot 2, whose ½ hide TRE estate lay only 6¾ miles to the south-east of Lupridge and which is close enough for a possible connection between the two to be considered. Against this possibility, however, is that their estates passed to different TRW successors, although this need not be conclusive. More significant perhaps is the uncertainty over Snotta 2’s actual name, which the DB spelling of Snode (as opposed to that of Estnota in Exon 397a1) suggests could have been related to Snodd(a) rather than Snot. On balance, it seems more likely that Snotta 2 and Snot 2 should be treated as separate people.
