Profile

Alweis 1’s estate was at Brushford, in the Taw valley to the east of Winkleigh in central Devon. It was one of four small TRE holdings called Brushford, but no connection between the holders can be discerned. The place-name derives from Old English brycg-ford ‘bridge, or causeway, ford’, and refers to the crossing of the river Taw here.

Alweis’s name was an Old French one, and as such she joins the small group of such names evidenced in pre-Conquest south-west England. There is, however, no clear reason to associate her with Helewis 1, whose Continental Germanic name may have been in its Old French form Heloise and was similarly spelt to that of Alweis in DB (Elous rather than Alous) but whose TRE manor was also very small and lay more than 30 miles from Brushford.
