Profile
Lufa 5’s estate was at Lovacott, on a small tributary of the river Torridge near Shebbear in north-west Devon. Although its possession of ‘land for 2 ploughs’ could indicate a slightly larger holding than its assessment of just ½ virgate would suggest, Lufa’s estate was clearly very small. It seems highly likely that Lufa had given his name to his holding (Lovecote in DB), although Gover et al. (1931-32: 108) preferred to derive both from the feminine form Lufu. However, the Exon (413b3) form Louus alongside side the DB form Lofe point strongly towards the TRE holder’s name being the masculine form Lufa, although this would usually give a place-name form *Lufan-cot.
