Profile

Siduwine 2’s small TRE estate was called Tamerlande in DB. That place-name has not survived but implies an estate near the river Tamar. The TO (496a4) records that Tamerlande was joined with (and so probably close to) Peeke, and both estates appear are associated with Luffincott in later medieval records (Thorn & Thorn 1985: Notes to 35,5). Luffincott does not occur in DB and the name is not on record before 1242 (Gover et al. 1931-2: 152). Since the modern settlement and late-medieval church of Luffincott lie between Peeke and the river Tamar, it is highly likely that Tamerlande was the earlier name for the place now called Luffincott.

Although Tamerlande was assessed for 1 virgate TRE it had land for 3 ploughs and a value of 40s, both of which indicate an estate larger than its assessment would suggest. This is probably another example of the under-assessment noted elsewhere in the DB records for Devon and Cornwall.

Siduwine 2’s estate at Tamarlande lay nearly 30 miles from that of Siduwine 4 at Brixton in south Devon, which for such small estates is perhaps too far removed for them to have been held by the same person. Furthermore, both estates had passed to different successors by 1086 and this favours them having different TRE holders, despite those holders having the same extremely rare name.

It is notable that the only three instances of the name Siduwine in DB are all in Devon, the estate of Siduwine 3 being at Ponsford and more than 40 miles from either Tamerlande or Brixton. However, all three estates were small, passed to different successors and seem too far apart for one person to have held them all. Yet the possibility cannot entirely be ruled out: small estates at Peeke and Ponsford, adjacent to those of Siduwine 2 and 3 respectively, had TRE holders called Edwin; and although the name Edwin is not uncommon amongst TRE landholders in Devon – there are 11 such instances – it is odd that it is twice found in such close association with the rare name Siduwine.
