Profile

Ealhhere 20’s three tiny Devonshire estates lay between 18 and 37 miles apart but it is more likely that all were held by the same man than that there were two landholders in Devon TRE with the same unusual name, even though his three estates had passed to three different tenants-in-chief by 1086. Ealhhere 20 is mentioned as a thegn in Exon (498b4), although the account of his estates given in Domesday Book would suggest that he was a very minor one.

Mullacott was Ealhhere 20’s largest holding and for that reason has been adopted as his identifying byname here, although it may be that his smallest estate, that at Brimblecombe, was more important.  Not only was this the best-placed in relation to his other two estates (being 22 miles from Mullacott and 18 miles from Sprytown) but it was also the one for which TO (498ba) described Ealhhere as ‘a thegn [who] held in parage’, which suggests that this was inherited and thus family land; it was the only one of his estates for which Exon (456b3) stated that he had the power of alienation.
