Profile

Edda 3’s solitary ferding was a mile or two to the north-west of South Molton, in north Devon. According to TO (499b8), after the Conquest her holding was added to a similarly small holding at [North] Aller held by another woman (Godgifu) TRE, and both had passed to Odo fitzGamelin (Odo 12) by 1086.

Although Edda’s estate was tiny, its apparent valuation of 5s (if the total for the lands of Edda and Godgifu is divided in proportion to their assessments) and its possession of ‘land for 1 plough’ may indicate a slightly larger holding than its assessment would suggest. DB and Exon (377b2) record that Edda ‘could go to whichever lord she wished’ and show that she had the power of alienation over her land (rather than being a dependent tenant), while the TO states that she held her land in parage, which implies that this was inherited family land.

Edda 3’s name could represent a shortened form of another feminine name such as Eadgifu, Eadgyth or Eadhild, but there is no evidence to associate her with any women of such a name who held land in the West Country TRE.
