Profile

Osgifu 2’s estate was at Chilsworthy, near Holsworthy in west Devon.  Despite the very small size suggested by its assessment of just ½ virgate, however, its TRW valuation of 20s and its possession of ‘land for 3 ploughs’ imply a more substantial (but still small) holding.

The DB spelling of her name is Odeua, which if correct would imply the Continental Germanic name Odgiva, whereas the corresponding Exon entry (481a3) gives her name as Oseua, which implies the Old English name Osgifu (von Feilitzen 1937: 334, 339).  A miscopying of the Exon text by the Exchequer scribe is the most likely explanation (Thorn and Thorn 1985: 52,1 Notes).
