Profile
Trawin 2’s estate was at Lulworth, straddling the hills and the cliffs of the south Dorset coast, where a landholder with a continental name would be unusual but not unprecedented before the Conquest. It was one of four TRE estates located within what were later the two parishes of East and West Lulworth, one of which was held by King Edward (Edward 15) and the largest of which seems to have been in the hands of the sheriffs of Dorset both before and after the Conquest, but there is no evidence to connect Trawin with any of the other holders as either tenant or commended man.If Trawin’s name represents the Continental Germanic name Traswin then he was the only person of that name recorded in DB and Lulworth was his only estate. If, on the other hand, his name represents a spelling error for Frawin, then his estate is too far distant to be associated with those of Frawin 2 in Devon or Frawin 3 in Sussex and he should instead be given the designation Frawin 7.
