Profile
Colbrand 5’s estate was one of four TRE at Creech, named (via Brittonic *crüg ‘abrupt hill, tumulus’) from the highest point of a line of hills overlooking the Isle of Purbeck in south-east Dorset (Mills 1977: 89-90). The four estates together amounted to 5 hides, which together with the shared name suggests they once formed a single land-unit. However, there is little evidence from the DB entries to indicate that its fragmentation had been recent, nor is there evidence to suggest any further connection between Colbrand and the other three TRE holders.Colbrand’s Creech estate was more than 50 miles from those of Colbrand 6 in Devon, the nearest other TRE holder of that name recorded in DB, which seems too far distant for any connection between Colbrand 5 and Colbrand 6 to be considered despite their estates having similar hidages; that Colbrand 5’s estate passed to a different post-Conquest successor is a further bar to the identification. There is no reason to consider Colbrand 5 in connection with anyone else.
