Profile

Vitalis 10 was the subtenant of Roger de Courseulles (Roger 10) on a 5-hide estate at Corton in 1086, the place-name deriving from Old English *corf-tūn ‘estate at the gap’ and describing its situation at a break between hills in south Dorset (Mills 2010: 26-7). This was Roger’s only estate in the county; but he held others elsewhere of which two, adjacent to each other at Ashington and Mudford Sock in south-east Somerset and totalling 4½ hides, were also held by a subtenant called Vitalis. These two estates lay roughly 23 miles from Corton and it is reasonable to presume that that were held by the same man, Vitalis 10, who was presumably one of Roger’s followers. However, although these Somerset estates were close to one held TRE by Vitalis 7, there is no other evidence suggesting that he survived the Conquest or that any of his estates passed to Roger 10, nor is there any other reason to associate Vitalis 10 with anyone else of that name.
