Profile
Burdel 1’s estate was the largest of several small estates at Rushton, by the River Frome in south-east Dorset, but there is no obvious reason to connect him with any of the other TRE landholders there. To find a small-scale landholder with an apparently Old French (or Continental Germanic) name in pre-Conquest southern England is unusual but not extraordinary (Lewis 1995: passim).
