Profile
That many of Hearding 4’s estates, along with many of those of his father Eadnoth 22’s colleague Tovi, sheriff of Somerset TRE, were used to create the fief of Earl Aubrey is widely known and accepted. Where Earl Aubrey was not the recorded successor to Hearding 4’s estates is where other arguments for the identity are needed.Five estates in Wiltshire were held by someone called Hearding TRE but did not pass to Earl Aubrey: Beechingstoke, Winterslow, Knighton, Figheldean, Ogbourne). These are attributed to Hearding 4 because extremely rare; because these estates are of a similar size and in lay close to estates known to have been held by Hearding 4; and because three of the estates (Knighton, Figheldean, Ogbourne) were held by a Hearding as tenant-in-chief in 1086.
