Profile
Goldstan 9 was a sokeman and subtenant of King William (William 1), whose small estate was one of at least four manors identifiable within White Roding parish in west Essex, although its precise location is uncertain (Bassett 1997: 29, 38). DB notes that Goldstan had never rendered service or customary dues for his land and had therefore given his pledge for it, which could imply that he was also the TRE holder since none is specified in DB. It is possible that Goldstan 9 was the same as Goldstan 7, a co-holder TRE of a tiny estate in Essex who remained as a sub-subtenant in 1086, because the name was rare and their lands were perhaps no more than 20 miles apart; but supporting evidence is lacking. There is no reason to connect Goldstan 9 with any other TRE or TRW person.Bibliography
