Profile

Manning 15’s estate was at Thurrock, probably one of several at what is now Grays Thurrock on the low land and alluvial marshes of the Thames Estuary in south Essex (Powell et al. 1983: 35-8, 57-9). DB records that he was a free man but gives no further details about him.

Although the Alecto edition interprets this name as Manni rather than Manning, the DB form does not support this and it is not necessary to suppose a scribal error (see ‘The name’, above).

This was the only estate recorded in DB as held TRE or TRW by someone called Manning and, although not quite 30 miles from the nearest estate held by anyone with the possibly related names Manni, Magni or Mann, there is no reason to consider Manning 15 in connection with any other estate or person.
