Profile
Sweting 7’s tiny estate was at Tilbury in south Essex, on a gravel ridge above the tidal marshlands of the River Thames. His was the smallest of the three or four small estates at Tilbury TRE, but there is no obvious association between Sweting or his estate and any of the others. DB states that he was a free man and also records that he had one bordar, who with his household will have constituted much of the estate’s workforce. In 1086 there was pasture for 40 sheep, perhaps utilizing the grazing available on the marshes, and it is reasonable to suppose that this was already being exploited during Sweting’s tenure.Although Sweting 7’s name was rare his estate was too small and too isolated to provide any reason to consider him in connection with any other person of that name TRE or TRW.
