Profile
Colsege 2’s little holding was the only one recorded by DB at Boyton, on the low watershed between the rivers Pant and Colne in north Essex. Later known as Boynton Hall it lay near the meeting-point of the parishes associated with the estates at Finchingfield, Sible Hedingham, Toppesfield and Wethersfield and probably originated as a sub-holding of one of them. It was regarded as a manor in its own right by 1086, however, and DB describes Colsege simply as a ‘free man’ with no indication as to lordship TRE.Colsege’s estate was primarily an arable one. He had two ploughs on his demesne and there were a further three ploughs on the land of the peasants, who comprised one villan and seven bordars with their households and together with four slaves provided the estate’s workforce. There was also a small area of woodland and 8 acres of meadow for the oxen of the plough-teams.
No other person is recorded with the name Colsege in DB, nor is there any reason to associate him with a person of similar name.
