Profile
Ealhhere 24 held a small estate at Rayne in north Essex, assessed for ‘2 hides less 20 acres’ and worth £7, as the subtenant of Hugh de Montfort (Hugh 4) in 1086. Two charters (S 1040; S 1043) purporting to confirm the grant of, inter alia, Rayne to Westminster Abbey by the TRE holder, Guthmund 5, are spurious and there is no indication of Westminster’s putative claim to Rayne in DB. Rayne lay more than 90 miles from, and had no tenurial link to, any other estate held TRW by someone called Ealhhere and so there is no reason to consider Ealhhere 24 in connection with any other person of that name.Bibliography
